Overview

Rolwaling and Tashi Lapcha region were once closed to the Western trekkers. After 1990 like other hilly parts of Nepal, this region has been opened to trekkers with an extra special fee. It's one of the most outstanding high alpine valley treks, in the north east of Nepal.
The trek starts from the busy bazaar (Town) of Barabise on the main highway to Tibet. From here, on leaving the civilization behind and entering into the high alpine valleys of Rowling off the beaten trail, sparsely populated area near the Tibetan border on the southern flank of the giant Mt. Gauri Shankar.

Trekking up the ridges rounding the scenic high passes and ascending gradually into the lovely upper part of this beautiful valley through the mist filled rhododendron, magnolia and oak forest.
Our adventure passes through traditional unspoiled Sherpa villages and farm-fields, under the shade of the towering giants Mt. Gauri Shankar and Meluangtse straddling the border with Tibet.
The trek leads to the last Sherpa village at Beding a large settlement in the Rolwaling region, situated in a narrow gorge.The trek also offers a great opportunity for a short climb to the summit of the Pachermo (6272 m/20572ft).
The trek is strenuous, prior trekking experience and logistics are absolutely necessary. You will also need a permit for climbing Pachermo peak. The Trek to Rolwaling and the Tashi- Lapcha Pass is one of the more challenging treks in Nepal, requiring expedition style camping trek with full logistic support.

Rolwaling trek crosses high Himalayan glaciers and up to altitudes of over 5700m with extreme temperatures upto -10 to -20 degrees. Since, the trek also includes the climbing option of the Pachermo Peak, crampons and an ice axe and rope is a must, even if it may not be necessary under good conditions.
Climbing Pachermo is a straightforward snow peak first climbed in 1955 along a well defined north-by-northwest ridge rising from a relatively flat, but crevassed, glacier that is still the main route to the summit. The Rolwaling valley is the main access to Pachermo. We climb north-east of the icefall of Tashi Lapcha, setting up a high camp just below rock walls at 5,500m. From this camp we gain the ridge of Pachermo, following it without much difficulty - but watching for crevasses which can cause problems near the summit.
The return journey is a steep descent with a pleasant walk up to the village of Thame at Khumbu area. At Thame, the old trade route over the Nangpa La into Tibet branches north follows another Bhote Koshi.Thame to Namche is an easy day after a few days of strenuous walk. It is a return to trekkers' civilization, a good pleasant trail climbing gently leads to the famed Namche Bazaar 'the Gateway to Everest' and the main village in the Khumbu region. After Namche Bazaar, our trek leads to the last camp of our wonderful adventure, Lukla, and then the panoramic flight back to the busy, bustling city of Kathmandu.

Itinerary

Day 1

Arrive Kathmandu (1300m/4265ft

A very warm welcome to the Kingdom of Himalayas. Upon your arrival at the Tribhuvan international airport our representative welcomes you and assists you transfer in your hotel in Kathmandu. After time to get refreshed, evening you'll meet and transfer for welcome dinner in one of the typical Nepalese restaurant in the heart of Kathmandu i.e. Utsav or Nepali Chula (Kitchen). Here you will not simply experience the traditional Nepalese dish but will be entertained with Nepalese traditional dance and folk songs. After the dinner, you will be transferred back to your respective hotel.

Day 2

City sightseeing tour of Kathmandu

Kathmandu is the historical and cultural heart of Nepal and has been a popular destination for tourists ever since Nepal opened its doors to visitors. The city presents a wonderful mix of Hinduism, Tibetan Buddhism and Western influence in the Valley. Bauddhanath: Stupa with its 130 ft. dome. One of the world's largest Stupa, Bouddha is generally acknowledged to be the most important Tibetan Buddhist monument outside Tibet. Pupshupatinath Temple: Pashupatinath is considered one of the holiest shrines of all the Hindu temples. The temple has remained the presiding deity of ruling Nepalese Royalty. -After the city tour, our leader or guide will do the final briefing of the expedition. They will also take the opportunity to check the members' personal equipment as the city bazaars and climbing shops will provide the last chance to correct any deficiencies. Overnight at Hotel.

Day 3

Drive from Kathmandu to Dolakha then onto Shigati, Trek to Suri Dobhan

From Kathmandu, we head northeast on the Friendship Highway which connects Kathmandu with Lhasa. A Lamosangu, we leave the Friendship Highway and take another way to Jiri. Earlier the motorable road used to be only upto Dolakha. But nowadays because of the Tamakoshi hydropower construction works, we can drive upto Shigati. From Shigati we trek to Suri Dobhan for our overnight stay.

Day 4

Trek to Jagat (1440m/4723ft) 5/6 hrs

Trek along the river, and then continue on the flat land. We cross several streams and jungles with varieties of orchid, rhododendron and other vegetation. Cross the suspension bridge to reach Jagat, a small town with people of different ethnicities.

Day 5

Trek to Simi-gaon (1,990m/6527ft) 5 hrs

At first, we follow the normal flat path, then the trail ascends and descends through the jungle. The trail follows the river bank. As the valley narrows, we cross the suspension bridge over the river. A steep climb takes us to the Sherpa village of Simi-gaon, spread on the terrace of the mountainside. The village is mostly inhabited by Buddhists and there are also a few Hindus.

Day 6

Trek to Kharka (2,900m/9512ft) 6 hrs

We pass by a few more Sherpa settlements. On a clear morning the views of Gaurishankar above the Rolwaling Valley is fascinating. From the ridge top at Simi-gaon, we continue towards the Rolwaling Valley. The trail climbs a rocky, wooded ridge with beautiful pine forests. Descent again to the river of Rolwaling Khola.

Day 7

Trek to Beding (3,690m/12,103ft) 4 hrs

Our trail ascends uphill through different varieties of plants and Rhododendron trees. Continue alongteh left bank of the Rolwaling Khola. Continuing along the deep river valley, we arrive at a tributary river from Gaurishankar. Enjoy the unfolding views of the Gaurishankar. The trail rises further until we come across an easy and relatively flat terrain. Finally, we arrive at the Sherpa village of Beding, located by the river.

Day 8

Trek to Na (4,180m/13710ft) 5 hrs

An easy walk along the northern bank of the Rolwaling River begins our today's trek. We pass across the summer village of Beding, watching yaks grazing in the field and people busy in their fields of buckwheat and barley. The Crestline formed by the peaks around the height of 6000 meters such as Chekigo, Bamango, and Konyklemo rise on the immediate left of the village. We arrive at a monastery believed to be a meditative place of the Buddhist Guru Padma Sambhava. Walking along the valley floor, we finally reach the summer village of Na surrounded by potato fields.

Day 9

Trek to Tso Rolpa Lake (4,588m/15048ft) 7 hrs

At first trek through the leveled plane and gradually ascend to witness the Himalayan Lake filled with the chilling water of the glaciers. The views of Menlung and Tibetan Side Mountains add glory to the unfolding vista. We trek along the right bank of the river and then cross the river to climb up the rocky lateral moraine of the Glacier. We then walk to Tso Rolpa for the night.

Day 10

Trek to Trakarding Glacier (4800m/15744ft) 4 hrs

Early morning trek to head toward Trakarding glacier. Walk past the glaciers throughout the day and explore the beauty of the surrounding. The trail will still be ascending through some rock climbing and a gradual walk on the glacier moraine, occasionally passing rocks overhangs.

Day 11

Trek to Tashi Lapcha Base Camp (5,010m/16432ft) 5 hrs

The walk follows high slopes above the glacier to avoid the lower section, but further up we have to trek along the centre on the hard rocky glacier. Steady walk leads us to the lowest point of the icefall and then climbing to the easiest point to gain the Drolambau glacier. Here we will be surrounded by superb high mountain scenery. Continuing further downhill, we camp at Tashi Lapcha Pedi Camp at the foot of Tashi Lapcha, surrounded by absolutely grandiose mountains over 6000m with 360 degree panorama.

Day 12

Cross Tashi Lapcha Pass (5,755m/18876ft) 5 hrs

Continue trekking to Tashi Lapcha Pass (5755m). From the pass, the view of senior Khumbu peaks is magnificent. Some hundred meters downhill trek under overhanging rock, we camp at a superb location with magnificent sunset views.

Day 13

Ascent Pachermo and descent to Thengpo (6272 m/20572ft) 8-10 hrs

We climb again to the neck of Tashi Lapcha and from there we start the ascent of Pachermo. The snow slopes lead us to the final ridge, sometimes requiring fixed ropes. From the Pachermo summit, enjoy the fantastic views of the Khumbu peaks including Everest, Makalu and many more. Descend to Col then to Thengpo. The Pachermo ascent takes about 5 to 6 hrs and then another 3 to 4 hrs descend takes us to Thengpo - 4370m. Note: It's the biggest and rewarding day of the trip

Day 14

Contingency/Reserve Day for summit

There is no such guarantee that we can get quite a favourable weather especially on our planned day for the Parchemo summit. So this day can use as a contingency day. If the weather becomes exceptionally unfavourable, we wisely have to postpone the program of summiting the peak. Sometimes somebody in the group may get some problems in acclimatizing well enough, then the day can be used in that condition too.

Day 15

Trek to Thame (3,820m/12530ft) 5 hrs

Today you will be experiencing a bit easy walk and will be enjoyable most of the way to Thame. A gradual descend brings us to Thame Village, the first hint of civilization since Beding. There is a very old and interesting Monastery at the upper end of the village. Now you have a glimpse of first really good views of the great peaks of the Khumbu including Mt Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Thamserku and Kusum Kangaru. Note: Some of the famous Everest pioneers were born and brought up in this village.

Day 16

Trek to Namche Bazaar (3445m/11302ft) 5 hrs

At Thame, the old trade route over the Nangpa-la into Tibet branches North, following the Bhote Koshi (River) which finally merge with Dodh Kosi that comes from Gokyo Lake. The trail descends gently at first and then steeply to a bridge over the river Dudh Koshi at Phunki Tenga. Passing by several villages and numerous teashops, the trail ascends steeply to Sangnasa where local Sherpa people sell the Tibetan goods. The way from Sangnasa to Namche Bazaar has small ups and downs with views of forest and some gigantic peaks of Everest region.

Day 17

Trek to Lukla (2,840m/9317ft) 6-7 hrs

The trail descends steeply downward so we need to walk slowly and under control as our shaky legs continuously battle the rocky terrain. After crossing the suspension bridges over the fast flowing Dudh Koshi and its tributaries the trail becomes more level and natural. Although we are travelling the same route down, we feel completely different views. We snap a mixture of open plains, rhododendron and pine forests, and in the distance snow covered peaks. We walk through the Sherpa villages' noticing impressive faith in Buddhism and culture of prayer stones and prayers flag while we walk through the villages. On arrival in Lukla, we stretch those sore legs and recall the experiences of the last couple of weeks. We experience the culmination of a fantastic trek on a happy note with everyone back safe and sound with smile on their faces!

Day 18

Fly back to Kathmandu

Saying final goodbye to our porters, we fly back to Kathmandu after our long mountain journey. The flight time to Kathmandu are scheduled in the morning normally because Lukla suffers a lot of wind afternoon. Sometime the flight time can be delayed due to bad weather and other reasons. The early morning flight drops us at Kathmandu and the Grand Himalaya van or coach will transfer you to the hotel. You may have time to relax after long journey and take back your breath and rest at your hotel with ending your Himalayan trip. Remember, we will be hosting a fantastic celebration dinner together in the finest restaurant in Thamel, in occasion of successfully completing your trip in the Himalayas!

Day 19

At Leisure in Kathmandu

Rest and relax at the hotel after such long a wonderful trip. The day is also reserved as a contingency day due to flight delays or other unforeseen conditions. For those eager to see as much of Kathmandu as possible, an early start is worthwhile to visit the temples of Pashupatinath and Swayambhunath and districts of Bhaktapur and Patan. Durbar Square is also on the essential list, as is the shopping area of Thamel. In the evening you can have your last night in Nepal, enjoying the Nepali cultural dinner show or go out to Thamel.

Day 20

Departure from Kathmandu

Today is free or last minute shopping for souvenirs or gift to your family, friends or relatives for you until your departure flight/drive or to commence any extra trips or activities you may have booked with us. If departing, you'll be transferred to the International Airport for your departure flight to your onwards destination.

What's included in the pricing

4 night hotel accommodation in Kathmandu in 3 to 4 star hotel with all rooms having private facilities. Breakfast is included. Accommodation is on a twin share basis but single rooms are usually available at an additional cost. Please inform us as early as possible if you wish to have a single room.
