"Sculpted canyons with wild rock formations, deep gorges, medieval villages, ancient fortresses, palaces and mysterious, ancient cave hermitages, Tibetan Buddhist gompas (Monastery) and soaring snow-peaks characterize this spectacular region, a 'thumb' sticking up into the Tibetan plateau. Mustang is a Kingdom tucked away along the deepest river gorge in the world, the Kali Gandaki, a remote and starkly beautiful region, Tibet's arid high desert bordered by some of the Himalaya's highest mountains."
Mustang (from the Tibetan Mun Tan, meaning "fertile plain") is the former Kingdom of Lo. It now forms part of north-central Nepal, bordering China on the Tibetan plateau between the provinces of Dolpo and Manang. The culture is Tibetan Buddhist. The Mustang region is often referred to as 'The Forbidden Kingdom of Nepal'. This stark and barren area of the middle Himalayas holds the last remnants of true Tibetan lifestyle untainted by foreign occupation. Whilst being annexed to Nepal, Mustang enjoys its own autonomy and the residents live much the same as they have for centuries. To avoid this unique Kingdom being overrun by tourism the region has been gazette as a restricted area with only small numbers of tourists given access every year. Our trip will initiate in Kathmandu, the colourful capital of Nepal. On the next day we fly to the picturesque town of Pokhara. After an evening discovering the pleasures of Pokhara we fly to the high village of Jomsom beneath the 8000m massifs of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri. From here we trek to the edge of the Forbidden Kingdom after a visit to Muktinath, a monastery sacred to Hindus and Buddhists alike. We leave the tourist route here and trek or ride on horseback through lower Mustang where spectacularly fluted cliffs of red hues overlook the Kali Gandaki River. The Kali Gandaki flows from the high plains of Tibet through Mustang into Nepal before flowing into India. The upper Mustang is dominated by an endless expanse of yellow and grey rolling hills made smooth by the wind. We traverse this lonely landscape on horseback via several passes (the highest being the Nyi La at 3990m), camping in villages nestled in their green irrigated oasis until we reach the spectacular walled town of Lo-Monthang. Visually, this is an extraordinary place and home of the Mustang Raja (King) as well as some beautiful temples and monasteries. The people of Upper Mustang are always curious about new arrivals and we can expect children, with scary wind-blown hair and apple red cheeks, will gather to confront the spectacle of foreign visitors. The abrasive lifestyle required to survive is easily evident here. After taking time to explore the area and interact with its small population we return to Jomsom and fly again to Pokhara and Kathmandu. Overall, Mustang involves a wilderness of huge proportions and offers a truly exceptional experience. A breathtaking and timeless journey through the Kingdom of Lo, until recently forbidden to foreigners, its cliff-side villages and majestic rock-faces bathed in the golden afternoon sun, or pink with the early morning's sunrays. The best of Nepal and Tibet wrapped up in a two-week trek and at lower altitudes so a great trek for almost everyone.

Early morning drive by tourist bus to Pokhara through the beautiful Nepalese countryside and the drive goes along the Trishuli River on Prithivi highway to Pokhara which will take 6 hours. We'll reach Pokhara lakeside in the afternoon and transfer to the hotel, and rest of the time we explore the surrounding lakeside areas. Pokhara is the city of lakes and offers magnificent views of Mt. Dhaulagiri, Mt. Manaslu, Mt. Machhapuchhare (Fish tail), five peaks of Annapurna and others.
The panoramic thrill flight of 20 minutes over the mountains from Pokhara after breakfast, with views of some 8,000 meters peak such as Annapurna & Dhaulagiri, brings you at Jomsom, the district headquarter of Mustang. Jomsom is also a major village on the Kaligandaki area linking the age old Trans-Himalayan Salt Trade route to Tibet. This place is renowned for its luscious apples and the routinely wind of the afternoon. Here we'll be meeting rest of our trekking crews, especially our porters and Mules. After having lunch we'll trek along the Kali Gandaki River upstream, partly walking in the river bed itself, with the spectacular views of Mt. Nilgiri, Mt. Dhaulagiri, Tukuche peak, Dhampus peak and so on. After easy walk of around 3 hours, we finally arrive at Ekley-bhatti village and with a nice break here, it takes an hour of easy walk to Kagbeni, which lies at the bank of two rivers. Kagbeni is an interesting windswept villages situated on the main age old Trans-Himalayan salt trade route to Tibet via Upper Mustang area. In Kagbeni a major tributary, Kak Khola (River), coming from Muktinath, meets Mustang Khola (River), and from there the river is called the Kali Gandaki.
Our journey starts with a special permit check up and onwards to the riverbank of Kaligandaki up stream. During the walk we have scenic picturesque place to stop through the sandy and windy trails. This trails follows the up and downhill. Firstly we reach Tangbe village with narrow alleys amongst white washed houses, fields of buckwheat, barley, wheat and apple orchards. From there we trek forward to Chhusang and after crossing the river head up to the huge red chunk of conglomerate that has fallen from the cliff above, forming a tunnel through which the Kaligandaki follows. We head on to small ridges reach at Chele village.
Today, we start our trek again and walk further to Eklo Bhatti. We climb to Taklam La Pass (3,624m/11,923 ft) through plateaus and narrow stretches with views of Tilicho Peak, Yakawa Kang and Damodar Danda. Further descend a little to the village of Samar. Climb the trail that goes above Samar village to the ridge then descending steeply to a stream. Another 3 hrs similar walk takes us to Syanbochen. On the way, we relax along the surrounding of cool streams and juniper trees. Locals use the dried leaves of junipers as incenses to invite deities and start any auspicious work. We also pass by a cave famously known as Ramchung Cave.
After breakfast we trek uphill to the Yamda La (3,850m /12,667ft) passing a few teahouses, chortens (Stupa) and local villages which is like Tibetan style of houses with open Varanda. We cross mountain passes and an avenue of poplar trees and fields of Barley. The climb to Nyi Pass (4,010m/13,193ft) would be a little longer. Descend to our overnight stop at Ghami, the third largest village in the Lo region, Ghami is surrounded by large fields most of which are barren.
Today's walk is through perhaps the driest part of Mustang, and much of your energy will be spent negotiating loose, dry soil. However, the magnificent views of the countryside, from the gentle contours of the north to the rugged mountains in the east and west, are a source of inspiration. Finally, you come to Tsarang, a large spread-out village at the top of the Tsarang Chu canyon. At the eastern end of the village are a huge dzong [fortress] and a red Gompa which houses an excellent collection of statues and Thangkas (Tibetan painting on silk with embroidery, usually depicting a Buddhist deity, scene, or mandala).
We'll spend part of the morning exploring the interesting village of Tsarang and its ancient monastery, before heading towards the walled city, Lo Manthang. We first descends to Charang Chu Canyon and then climbs steeply after crossing the river, above the valley to a large isolated Chorten (Stupa) that marks the boundary between Tsarang and Lo Manthang. Trekking towards the forbidden city of Mustang offers the magnificent views of Mt. Nilgiri, Mt, Tilicho, Mt. Annapurna I and Bhrikuti peak. After few hours of easy uphill climb on a broad motor able track we'll arrive at windy pass of Lo (3,850m), from where we eventually get our first glimpse of the capital and the walled city of Musatang, Lo Manthang. The walled city has only one entrance and most of the lodges are built outside the city wall. You will marvel at the views of the walled city that appears magnificent with its hills on the Tibetan Border. Within the walls of Lo Manthang are about 150 houses built among narrow streets, and some of the largest and finest Tibetan Buddhist gompas (Monastery) in Nepal. The city is quite prosperous due to primarily to its past salt and wool trade along the Kali Gandaki with Tibet.
After having our breakfast early in the morning, depending on your choice, we'll either hire a jeep or horses to take us to the most fascinating site of Lo manthang, the Chosar valley and the Jhong cave which was recognized to be 2500 years old by the National Geographic. Leaving Lo along a wide, canyon trail, past dry gullies and an ancient, ruined fortress, across a bridge and through a cultivated area, we finally view the cave village of Chosar, with the deep-red Nyphu Gompa (3760 m) built into the rock face. Past the gompa is an incredible cave hermitage called Jhong Cave, which you negotiate by ladders and through small tunnels. In front of us, a range of spectacular snow-peaks marks the border with Tibet, and around us gurgling streams and green meadows line our trail. After enjoying our invaluable time here in the Chosar valley, we'll head back down to our camp for our lunch. We’ll spend the afternoon by paying a visit to the King at his Palace and the other main attractions of this town viz. the Tall Jampa Lakhang "God house", the red Thugchen Monastery, Chyodi monastery and the Entrance Hall.
While returning from Lo-Mangthan, we take a different route than that we came by. Trek to Drakmar via Gyakar with more than 1200 years old Ghar Gompa with Guru Rinpoche as the primary figure. The Gompa is also famous for its rock paintings. According to the legend, anyone who makes one wish at the Ghar Gompa, their wish is fulfilled. Explore the local area. Day 12: Trek to Ghiling (3806m/12,484ft) 5-6 hrs Today, we will head down to Ghiling as our journey for our overnight stay after a long walk takes 5-6 hrs. After arrival and lunch enjoy the day exploring the area, but it will be dusty wind in the afternoon, better to walk in evening time.
We re-track back to Chhuksang for the overnight stop after 5 hrs walk. You will have wonderful scenery during the journey with a Himalayan view all day.
Our last day of the day would be a long one. Better to walk early start as before and trek to Kagbeni. Finishing the upper Mustang trails and we join the normal Annapurna circuit trek. After lunch at Kagbeni will head on to Jomsom for the overnight stop. It’s the last night of our trek and there will be a farewell party with our entire crews.
After having our breakfast we'll bit a final goodbye to our wonderful porters and catch our flight back to Pokhara. It’s a 30 minute dramatic flight to Pokhara between gorge of the two huge mountains, Annapurna and Dhaulagiri. On arrival at Pokhara airport, your guide will transfer to the lakeside hotel where you spend rest of the day exploring the lake.
